Like all good things, bands also come to an end, and this is the end of Deathbed. The last six years have brought us amazing experiences, great friends and allowed us to fulfill some of our dreams - so a lot of good memories to look back on. Thank you to each and every one of the people we’ve met along the way, who came to our shows, organized them, bought our records & other stuff, lent us a place to sleep, cooked for us or was a part of our story in any other way. We truly appreciate it all!

We still have two more shows to go on so these are the last chances to see us live. Both of them actually offer a screening of Endstand -documentary Fire Inside - erään yhtyeen tarina.

Found this really nice review of "stormbirds" by World's Appreciated Kitsch:

'Birds of a coming storm' is one of the best records I've listened to during the entire 2010.
Moreover, Deathbed is one of my favorite bands nowadays, and besides that their current line up consists of 3 ex-Endstand members, which is maybe my favorite hardcore band ever. Period.

So, the record was released by Combat Rock Industry, the coolest hardcore / punk label in Finland (also home for bands like Riistetyt, Wasted, Victims, Endstand, Atom Notes, The Heartburns and more), run by Janne (ex-Endstand's and now Deathbed vocalist). It's available in both CD and vinyl formats; if you are one of the 30 lucky ones you already know that there was a super limited edition (hand painted silver & black cover, hand-numbered, clear vinyl and a big poster of the original 'stormbirds' artwork incl.) available during their Greek tour, as well!

'Birds of a coming storm' is Deathbed's 2nd full length album (following 2007's 'Veritas' and the split with Kolt in 2006) and in my opinion is their most mature material since their inception. It includes 9 songs (3 of them in finnish language, 5 in english and there's an instrumental song, too) of passionate yet emotional dark hardcore with a lot of crust and post-hardcore influences. I dare to say that they play like a fictitious heavy band consisting of Tragedy, Endstand, From Ashes Rise and Fall Of Efrafa members...

Their music is fueled with intensity, but there's also a feel of melancholy in their songs.
I'm definitely into Deathbed and I can't wait to see them live again...

Check out underground hardcore bands and fuck the mainstream. There are a lot of 'diamonds' hiding behind the surface and you are still sticking to the overhyped bands that media enforce you to shallow. Pff...

It was a good mail day when the Birds of A Coming Storm found its way into my mail box. A quick look at the CD and I learned the band was from Finland (nice) and it was being released by Combat Rock Industry records (nice!). With both evidences in place, I predicted what was in store for me. My predictions were wrong. In the best way possible.

First off. There are various moments, spread over the entirety of this release that remind me on various bands. So bear with me when I namedrop them. But also keep in mind, that in awaking memories of other more established artists, DEATHBED manage to sound uniquily like themselves. Wheels are not being invented here but there's something compelling and refreshing about how these different echoes come together on Birds... There's familiarity that tugs you in but there's also the ability to shake you up. A nice blend indeed.

'Kirous' starts thing of and is remarkably gripping. Slow and melancholic it's a sure-shoot right to the finish, rising highest during a instrumental-bridge, reminiscent of Switchblade vs. late Buried Inside just before the end credits roll. Powerful. Right here, I sensed maturity and knack for proper song writing. From there on out, DEATHBED denies complacency and keeps things moving and changing.

Throughout, more stellar acts keep cropping up, such as fellow Scandinavians; Burst, Lack and Acursed. Accompanied with such sounds is a considerably affective atmosphere, gloom and doom and sadness, channeled through palpable aggression and drive. There's also a hint of N-American new school hardcore. You know: the deep type. So, there's no shortage of drama either. A loud as hell cocktail that is borderline cinematic at times.

You'd be forgiven to feel as if you'd got beamed up and spat down in the outskirts of a remote town in Finland in the dead of winter. The cold winds and black winter days are tangible after sitting through Birds... Which is quite the accomplishment. This is proper winter music with undeniable presence of prolonged darkness and the want for light. It's almost tragic. This "feel" of Finland is felt the most in the more unconventional tracks, read: the slower ones.

'Pelko Antaa Suunan' is one of my favorites. It's quite unique in its menacing calm. The use of E-Bow on the guitars creates a haunting effect. It ends in a tad predictable fashion which in turn will make the headbangers happy. A tasteful usage of Cry Baby pedals made yours truly happy.

The faster numbers are steeped in the neo-crust variety (i.e. From Ashes Rise) yet feature even more current approach that rivals the recently deceased Lewd Acts. It's a real punch in the gut. Even if the slower tracks are more often than not, the shiners here, I feel that the ragers are needed. If they were not present to kick over the coffins at this funeral, the bleak-o-rama might have been overwhelming.

I do not have a language preference when it comes to music. In DEATHBED's case though, something curious happens. The vocal performance is notably more commendable when sung in their native tongue, Finnish. Language aside, the vocals on a whole have a tad unique ring to them. Nothing outrageous but slightly out of the ordinary. Can't really put my finger on it.
The bass tone is enormous and rattles your ribcage. They are high in the mix and add an aggressive edge to the organic and clear-accented guitars. The overall sound is great and fits the music perfectly.

It is hard to find faults in this confident release. As much as I applaud how they seamlessly mix the N-American influences with the Scandinavian ones I'm eager to hear them elaborate more on the latter. As a whole, everybody can find something engaging on Birds of A Coming Storm as it is pleasantly dynamic yet cohesive. Ignoring this record is ill-advised.

Deathbed on jäänyt tässä taloudessa jostain syystä hieman vähemmälle, joten olipa jo aikakin korjata asia uuden Birds of a Coming Storm –levyn hankinnalla, vinyylimuodossa tietenkin. Ulkoisesti Birds of a Coming Storm on jylhä teos jo komeiden kansiensa (niistä myöhemmin!) puolesta, mutta myös sisältönsä puolesta tämä on perin kunnianhimoinen järkäle.

Kyllähän tätä levyä kuunnellessa voi löytää pieniä viittauksia Tragedyyn. Mistään rokkikopiosta ei kuitenkaan ole kysymys, onhan tässä sen verran paljon jo sitä omaa näkemystä mukana… ja Neurosista. Maailmanloppua manaillaan oikein urakalla ja apokalyptiset mutanttilokit tulevat kaivamaan kuulijalta silmät päästä, sen verran tummanpuhuvasta paskasta nyt puhutaan! Mitään yksittäisiä biisejä on tästä tasaisen vahvasta kokonaisuudesta hankalaa nostaa esille, sillä tämän varpusparven yksilöt eivät pärjää yksinään, mutta joukossa niiden tuhovoimaa ei estä edes Mao Zedongin suuri harppaus! Tai nostetaan nyt sitten Salvation Denied.

Kuulija voi löytää itsensä keskellä eteeristä fiilistelyä, vähän samanlaisesta tilanteesta kuin Linnut –leffan lopusta. Mutta sitten tirpat päättävätkin hyökätä kimppuun, ihan yhtäkkiä. Metallisen kylmä hardcore pureutuu luihin ja ytimiin. Kylmien soundiensa puolesta tätä voisi luulla paremminkin jo Cult of Luna tai Isis –tyyliseksi sludgeksi. Nopeaa kaahailua albumilla on yllättävän vähän, tempo on pääasiassa keskinopea vaikka taipuukin välillä suoranaiseen salamoivaan blastiin. Mutta itselleni nuo hieman hitaammat kohdat tehosivat niitä nopeampia paremmin. Veritas kun on kuulematta, niin en tiedä onko tämä siihen nähden notkahdus vaiko parannus. Julkaisuajankohtansa puolesta tämä on siis mitä parhainta kesämusiikkia, varsinkin nyt kun ollut noita tappohelteitäkin. Eli ei muuta kuin levy kopioitumaan kasetille (tämän vaiheen voi kiertää, jos on ostanut cd-version) ja uima-allasbileiden taustamusiikiksi jytisemään!

Paketin kruunaavat Ville Angerin tekemät tyylikkäät kannet. Jälki on tylyn mustavalkoista ja minimalistista, mutta ei millintarkkaa, jonka vuoksi jälki on myös elävää. Takakannen spiraali on erityisen onnistunut ratkaisu, joka viestittää tekijänsä tyylitajusta enemmän kuin tämä lause. Levystä ilmestyi myös 50 kappaleen erikoispainoskin kirkkaalla vinyylillä, jättiposterilla ja käsintehdyillä kansilla. Tämän näytön perusteella Deathbedia on “sorsittu” tässä taloudessa täysin turhaan, mutta eipä tehdä niin enää!

Birds of a Coming Storm reviewed by Damned by Light -webzine

Deathbed got it's first official release out in 2006, it being a split with Kolt, and released their debut album "Veritas" in 2007. Now in 2010 the band finally released their second album.

This could be shortly described as dark hardcore punk with metal- and crust-influences, topped with vocals between a harsh, low shout and a growling scream. The songs vary from rhythmic and even downright aggressive beatings with a dark feel to some slower and mellower but still highly dark, disturbing, and very atmospheric tracks. The main emphasis is on bursting hate and aggression through mostly mid-pace crusty hardcore, with even a bit of simplistic d-beat thrown in on the B-side to really deliver the songs' feel. There's also some moments on the opposite side of the spectrum, such as the song "Pelko Antaa Suunnan" with it's desperate, vocal-based and minimal approach. The album's desperate and hateful feel can even get you by surprise, as when you're hoping the dark and even sad feelings to change into faceless aggression the emotions only tighten up and become even more oppressive. It's all really impressive and overall so convincing, that after "healing up" from the beating you want to listen to the album again and let it really devour you.
Whereas the band's previous album was weakened due to the too polished sounds this one sounds really natural and organic, and even the band's influences from metal music have blended in to be a natural and unified part of their music. The sounds are pleasingly raw and somewhat heavy to really emphasize the dark feel, while still keeping all the instruments clear anda udible. The vocals sound fittingly anguished and aggressive, too, and even quite personal. It all sounds professional, as does the musicianship itself - it's no wonder though, these fellows are experienced in their game. The album is very holistic, all it's elements fit together and work together. It's also of fitting lenght so that the overwhelming emotions don't become a too heavy listening.
The album looks great. The LP (do note the album is also available as a CD) is packed in black'n'white gatefold covers with very minimal but effective artwork, with the lyrics printed on the inside along with the basic info. It all looks very though-out and fitting. The lyrics themselves leave little to the imagination: supressed thoughs of depression and death are bursting out along with criticism towards the modern world, business-people, wars, innocent suffering and the like. The lyrics really manage to paint an image of a mind's darkness for the most part, and fit perfectly together with the music.
I can only say that while I was impressed but not fully convinced by the band's previous album, this one really blow me away. The songs have their own appeal and identities and are easy to tell apart, but at the same time they work together to create a really dynamic, naturally flowing and varying whole with a strong emotional side as well. The band has it's own sound and style.
I can only wonder if the band can top this in the future? I think and hope that they do. They could occasionally create some bigger contrasts between the aggression and more melancholy-based moments to keep things even more on the move, but aside of that I can only give them a thumbs up and wish them well.
